Congratulations to Jerold Adams for celebrating 15 years with Iowa Select Farms!
Although Jerold was technically hired as an animal caretaker at Parker Sow 16 on March 22, 2004, he’s been working with pigs his entire life.
“I grew up on a farm near Kellerton and used to raise livestock with my Dad and four brothers,” recalled Jerold. “Farming, and the hardworking lifestyle that goes along with it, has always been second nature to me.”
Since being hired in 2004, Jerold has worked in various roles. While at Parker, he also drove wean truck part-time, then worked wean truck full-time while working at the sow farm part-time and then finally transitioned to the gilt development unit (GDU) side of things.
In his current role as manager of Gourley G001, Jerold takes care of daily animal movements, observations, chores and treatments. He also helps with chores at two nearby GDUs for Brian Brown.
“Whether it’s through work or personal life, I know just about everyone in the area,” said Jerold. “That’s the thing about living where we do. Everyone knows each other and is there to help you out whenever you need it.”
When he’s not a work, Jerold stays plenty busy with his small cow/calf herd, building custom fence and helping his son, Mitchell, farm. He also enjoys spending time with his two other kids, 11 grandkids and 1 great grandkid. His granddaughter, Keely Bradley, was an Iowa Select Farms’ intern and now works at Smyrna Sow 38.
“Free time is hard to come by in these parts,” he said. “My generation all grew up on farms and we were bred to work hard. I enjoy keeping busy.”
In the off chance that he does have free time, Jerold and his wife, Deanna, enjoy camping and traveling to Texas for vacation. “I always joke that when the kids figure out where we are, we’ll move again,” chuckled Jerold.
In all seriousness, Jerold loves spending time with his family and even buys his kids and grandkids tickets to Iowa Select Farms’ Adventureland Family Days every Christmas. “It’s a present that everyone really looks forward to every year,” said Jerold. “It’s nice to work for a company that gives us some time off to have fun with our families.”
