Ignite the Spirit in O'Brien County

posted on Wednesday, December 22, 2021

Shout out to ISU Extension and Outreach in O’Brien County for helping feed families this holiday season.

We're still getting pics in from the almost 50 student-based organizations that participated in the Ignite the Spirit Program offered by Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, and these are just in!

4-H County Council leaders reached out to schools to learn about local hunger in their respective communities. After making those connections, County Council members prepared take-home meals featuring our delicious pork loins as well as other holiday dinner foods including as canned and frozen vegetables, milk, gravy, rolls, and dessert.

These 4-H leaders practiced following a budget when using Project Ignite funds to purchase the additional foods for the bags and then packed them. To make sure the meals made their way to where they were most needed, meal bags were sent out through the local backpack program.

Ignite the Spirit is an extension of the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Operation Christmas Meal program and is aimed at increasing awareness of hunger locally and igniting the spirit of service by giving local student groups the tools—pork!—to help even more families during the holiday season.

Kudos to all the County Council members that make this possible! #IgniteTheSpirit
