Jordan River Messiah Church in Charles City runs the food pantry for Floyd County and serves 750 families each year—around 1500 people a month. “Most of our households are elderly citizens, people who are disabled, single parent families, or are families with parents who have two or more part-time jobs and are trying to make ends meet,” said Pastor Debbie Lincoln who coordinates the pantry.
Members of the community help out at the pantry, and over half of the $130,000 budget... comes from Floyd county residents, the rest from grants. “Our community is very generous and our families are extremely grateful,” said Pastor Lincoln. “About two and a half years ago our numbers started to decrease as people are finding more jobs—which is very positive as families can get back on their feet,” she said.
Every Sunday the pantry serves a hot meal from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to around 30 families, and all families who utilize the pantry receive around $150 worth of groceries each month.
