Our Employees Are Awesome!

It takes a special type of person to be a pig farmer.
Those who show up to the barns bright and early to put in a full day of feeding, choring, breeding, farrowing, weaning, moving, sorting and loading pigs, have traits that make them stand out. In fact, you may be surprised to find that you have more in common with pig farmers than you think. No one demonstrates this better than our employees here at Iowa Select Farms.
Our employees are positive, even when the going gets tough and lend a helping hand to make sure others can reach their full potential. Our employees are knowledgeable and genuinely care about the animals, people, environment and the communities around them. Our employees go above and beyond in everything they do and are dedicated to working hard each and every day.
These values are inherently Iowan, whether you’re a pig farmer or not.
We already knew our employees embodied these core Iowan values, but we decided to go directly to the source – their co-workers – to find out what exactly they were doing to make our company and state a place to be proud of. This quote about Katie, a member of our health services team says it all.
“Katie is always friendly, approachable, and willing to help out,” said one of Katie’s co-workers. “She is just an awesome person to work with!”
We know all our employees are awesome, just like Katie, so this fall we decided to celebrate them. In recognition of once again being named a Des Moines Register Top Workplace, each of our employees had the opportunity to nominate up to five of their co-workers for simply being awesome. It could be for their unique talent, special skills, dedication to their job, a positive character trait or simply lending a helping hand when it was most needed. Each person that was nominated received a surprise Awesome Box in the mail full of pig-themed goodies and clues as to who nominated them.
When we received over 400 responses, we knew this overwhelming amount of positivity just had to be shared. We read through every nomination that was submitted and noticed six major themes that rose to the top: positivity, dedication, caring for others, going above and beyond, helping others and being knowledgeable.
Over the next few days, we will be posting about how these six different themes make our employees awesome – as told by their co-workers.
