Power Snack Day Five Wraps Up in Cresco

posted on Monday, November 1, 2021

It's always a great day when we get to visit Cresco, Iowa! What a send-off for our final stop on day 5 of Power Snack by leaving the Cadets of Howard-Winneshiek Community School District with 20 boxes of coupons. Holy cow, that's 2,000 coupons each with a $5 coupon for fresh deli ham and a $3 coupon for a whole wheat loaf of bread.

Power Snack is a program established by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation, in coordination with Iowa Select Farms, that gives students within Iowa communities, just like Cresco, the opportunity to purchase a protein-packed ingredient--ham. Students who are full with protein are able to focus on the things that really matter, such as learning in the classroom.

Denise Headington, the Student and Family Case Manager for Howard-Winneshiek Community School District, says, "this program is a great resource for families with food insecurities as it allows them the ability to have nutrition food to provide to their students." Denise continues on to say, "they have also allowed some of my students from challenging homes to be able to use the coupons and go to the store and get a loaf of bread and ham without needing money. Some students have shared that is what they mostly eat. It continues to be so important for our students."

While this is the end of our 5th day of Power Snack journeys, we will be back on the road Wednesday with a whole lot more of coupons to go around. See you then!
