Remarkable Year in Remsen

At MMCRU Royals Community Schools, Power Snack coupons have been extremely helpful keeping at-risk students fed during the holidays and extended breaks.
“We send them in the mail to our families with a letter between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Guidance Counselor, Kayla Means. “We hear that they are thankful for them and work really well. The power snack program is so amazing for so many families!"
Since Power Snack first came to Remsen in 2017, 300 qualifying students have received support. A program of Iowa Select Farms and the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation that provides at-risk kids in the district with deli ham and whole wheat bread coupons. Last year, Pork Sticks were added as a way to immediately alleviate hunger.
“We heard from teachers and counselors like Kayla that they were reaching into their own pockets to provide snacks for their students,” said Allyson Mathisen, Communications Manager at Iowa Select Farms. “Pork Sticks were a new resource to add to their arsenal for fighting back against childhood hunger. Not only are they delicious, but they serve as an immediate, nutritious resources that helps students curb hunger and focus on learning.”
Throughout the 2020-2021 school year, 150 students will receive Pork Sticks and Power Snack coupons. The coupons can be redeemed anywhere deli ham and whole wheat bread is sold and provide enough food ingredients for twelve wholesome and nutritious ham sandwiches. Students will get them four times throughout the year, totaling 4,800 meals for local students in-need!
