“I’m really proud to be from the number one swine production state in the nation, so I really wanted to find a well-known pig company within the state of Iowa to work for the summer,” said Emily, a sow production intern from Hinton, Iowa.
It’s safe to say she achieved this goal by taking on her summer internship with Iowa Select Farms. Emily will be a senior at South Dakota State University in the fall where she is majoring in animal science with a science specialization and a pre-vet focus along with minors in animal health and biology.
Emily’s career interests in veterinary science have motivated her to work hard and learn as much as she could during her time at Iowa Select Farms.
“When I started, I was most excited to pull piglets in farrowing,” she explained. “In breeding, I was most excited to deal with the boars and learn how to post cervical AI. I also enjoyed my department visit day where I had the opportunity to shadow a company veterinarian.”
All Emily’s hard work and willingness to learn has made a positive impact on her farm, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by her co-workers.
"Emily has a very friendly personality and is able to fit right in with the crew,” said her manager, John. “She is always willing to help out with anything, and she wants to learn more about the production system and practices."
We couldn’t be more proud that Emily has become a member of the Iowa Select family. Enjoy the rest of your summer, Emily!
