“One of the main reasons I’ve stayed in the industry is described well by the saying, ‘You come for the pigs, you stay for the people,’” explained Megan, a sow production intern. “The people at Iowa Select Farms and in the swine industry in general are absolutely amazing and some of the kindest people I’ve ever met.”

Megan is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and has become part of the Iowa Select Farms family this summer while serving as a sow production intern. She will be a junior at South Dakota State University in the fall and is studying animal science and agricultural science with a swine science minor.

Although she didn’t grow up on a farm, she found a love for the swine industry that led her to Iowa Select this summer. Her role as a sow caretaker helped her learn even more about the industry she is so passionate about.

“My favorite part of my internship has been doing so many things, just getting the opportunity to try so many different things in such a short amount of time,” said Megan. “From farrowing to breeding to doing random odd jobs around the farm. My day is always very different, and I like that.”

Megan’s hard work and willingness to learn hasn’t gone unnoticed by those around her.

“I would just want to say, thanks for picking Megan to be our intern this year. Megan is easy going and gets along with the crew well! She's smart and has picked up on things pretty quick. She's eager to learn,” said Megan’s manager, Bert. “We can depend on Megan to finish task given to her. When Megan started, I told her I wanted her to get to know the crew, building relationships with people is just as important as working with the pigs. She's made some friends that will go beyond her internship with Iowa Select.”

We’re wishing you the best during the rest of your internship, Megan. Keep up the great work!
