Winnebago

Good afternoon, Winnebago County! Our crew headed west towards Forest City to deliver 1,000 Power Snack coupons and 200 Pork Sticks. Since 2014, 2,379 at-risk students in the county have received Power Snack deli ham and whole wheat bread coupons—enough resources to make 114,192 ham sandwiches. WHOA!

"These coupons are another helpful resource that provide much-needed assistance with narrowing the financial gap that many of our families are struggling with,” said Nancy Prohaska, counselor at Forest City Schools. “Then adding on top with this being a COVID year, these coupons are a real lifesaver! We so appreciate the Power Snack program.”

Since last Monday, October 19, Iowa Select Farms’ employees have been traveling the state distributing this year’s Power Snack resources for schools. In total, 20,000 pork sticks and coupons for 1,170,000 ham sandwiches are being delivered to 99 schools across Iowa. Power Snack™ helps reduce childhood hunger in Iowa by providing kids access to nutritious food at home. Four times throughout the school year, children identified by the school as food insecure receive a $5 coupon for deli ham and $3 coupon for a loaf of whole wheat bread.

The coupons can be redeemed at any local grocery store or market and supply students with the food ingredients to make twelve delicious (but most importantly nutritious!) “Power Snacks” at home. Coupons are typically distributed prior to extended holiday breaks when students go without breakfast and lunch meal programs at school.

“As farmers and pork producers, we’re passionate about assisting hunger-relief efforts, particularly those directed towards children,” said Allyson Ladd, Communications Specialist at Iowa Select Farms. “Oftentimes, parents are working on weekends and holidays and something simple like a ham sandwich may be the difference in preventing kids from going hungry.”
